The History of In Shape

In 1934, at the age of 15, Hetty Holling began cutting hair in her mother's lounge in Barnsley with little more than scissors, a jug and bowl. From there she bought her first house and in 1947 her first salon "Coiffeur des Dames", which soon became a great success.

However in 1953 for personal reasons Hetty moved with her family to Bournemouth, and in 1969 Hetty bought the salon at 549 Charminster Road naming it "Hetty Holling's". Hetty ensured that all her children were trained as hairdressers upon leaving school. During this time Hilary her daughter attended night school at Bournemouth Technical College to study the theory of hairdressing, thus completing her hairdressing apprenticeship at the same time as passing her City and Guilds in Hairdressing, which was the recognised qualification at that time.

In 1981, Hetty announced she was retiring from hairdressing and that she wanted one of her five children to continue with the family business. With this in mind Hilary returned to her roots and completed a course at Roger Moore's Hairdressing School where she completed a 6 month course achieving the latest hairdressing skills. On qualifying this course Hilary took over the day to day running of the salon and changed the salon name to In Shape much to Hetty's dismay. Hilary also renovated the salon from standard cubicles to an open salon with modern fittings and the latest Wella equipment. Stripping the forward basins of that time and installing back basins, something Hetty believed would never catch on. As with most family businesses, the salon remained close to Hetty's heart and she continued cutting hair until she sadly passed away at the age of 72.

Since then Hilary has continued trading under the name of In Shape, and thus working with a number of stylists over the years. After several of her own adventures Hilary's daughter Joanne completed her hairdressing apprenticeship with Roger Moore Associates on Poole Hill.

In 2009, after an unexpected accident Joanne came to her mother's rescue. Hilary had fallen in the salon breaking her shoulder in two places. Hilary had to have an operation to repair her shoulder and was unable to work for six months. On returning to work Hilary found that Joanne had made a few subtle changes, therefore already starting to make her mark on the salon as she had done in 1981 to her mother before her. The salon has been successfully styling hair for over 40 years and will hopefully continue to do so for many more. In Shape takes pride in the fact that it is a down to earth friendly salon, which ensures top quality hairdressing at affordable prices. No job is too big or too small, from Shampoo and sets to precision cutting and colouring.

In April 2013 Hilary officially retired from hairdressing and In Shape passing the baton fully to her daughter Joanne.
